About Us and our Benefactors
My name is Lisa, and I am the executive director of Sweet Bear Rescue Farm in Hendersonville, NC. Prior to my life as a sanctuary director, I was a business consultant, which was wonderful because it allowed me to see the world. After visiting nearly 50 countries, many on my own, I am now spending some time here in Cuenca, Ecuador!
My path here has been a journey of its own. My home was destroyed in Hurricane Helene, and I have been living in a camper since the storm. But a wonderful family joined me in June of 2025 as primary caregivers, and after about four months of training, I left them to run the day to day operations on the farm while I finally take a break from sanctuary life!
My passions are travel and animals, and I really love the process of truly immersing myself in a place. I fell in love with Cuenca immediately and found my people here. This tour is the result of meeting so many incredible individuals and learning about their missions. I am thrilled to bring these businesses to the attention of fellow travelers.
As a seasoned traveler, I know the research for a vegan can be quite intimidating, and when you are working with a foreign language to boot, it is awfully nice to have someone who knows the land, the people, and is working really hard at learning the language! My goal is to immerse you in the culture of Ecuador so you can love it as much as I do. Bienvenido!

Sweet Bear Rescue Farm is a non-profit animal sanctuary located in Hendersonville, NC, dedicated to providing a lifelong home for rescued farm and domestic animals. Founded in 2017 and directed by Lisa for nearly ten years, the sanctuary specializes in the care of goats, pigs, chickens, and cats, focusing on individualized medical attention and advocacy for animal welfare. Following the significant damage caused by Hurricane Helene in late 2024, the farm has demonstrated immense resilience, currently transitioning into its next chapter, "After the Storm," while maintaining its core mission of compassion and rescue.
Hearts of Gold Foundation is a cornerstone of the Cuenca community, acting as an umbrella organization that provides professional mentorship and capacity building to smaller local nonprofits. Their mission is to break the cycle of poverty by empowering vulnerable women, children, and families through holistic support and sustainable development.
Their flagship initiative, Proyecto AMA, offers critical mental health services, life-skills workshops, and medical care to those in need. Beyond immediate relief, the foundation creates pathways to financial independence by operating micro-enterprises, including a successful women-led cleaning cooperative and specialized baking programs. By focusing on both community development and long-term economic stability, Hearts of Gold helps mothers and families in the Azuay region build a secure future
